From tests to tasty cupcakes
Would you trade the heart pounding excitement of monitoring online exams for the artistic pleasure of creating delicious and beautiful cupcakes in your own business? This is not a trick question. Frosted: Cupcakes & Goodies in Ft Bragg, CA has made that possible for Corrina Peña. Nowadays she bakes gorgeous, delectable custom cakes, cupcakes and other desserts for weddings and all sorts of celebrations. Sounds like a great move, to us!
All her life, Corrina had worked in office jobs. Before her daughters were born, she was an account manager for a large online proctoring company. After her second daughter arrived, she quit her job to stay home and raise her babies. The extra time in her days allowed creativity to blossom.
This opened up the doors for me to create. And I was sort of led on the path I didn’t realize was laid out before me to develop a business.
From birthday gifts to a business
Frosted started almost accidentally. Corrina enjoyed making and decorating cupcakes and cakes, for birthdays and special occasions. Friends and family thought they were wonderful and delicious. So, encouraged by her husband and close friends, she dived into making her hobby into a business.
Today, besides cakes and cupcakes, Corrina is venturing into the world of decorated sugar cookies. And they’re beautiful! Browse Corrina’s Facebook page (find the Menu on her About page). Frosted also offers rush orders, special flavors and added touches. Enjoy delivery service in the Ft Bragg/Mendocino area.
Ft Bragg, CA is often confused with Fort Bragg, NC, so remember that they are almost 3,000 miles apart. Delivery service only includes the Ft Bragg on the West Coast, near Mendocino. Sorry, Fayetteville.
Above all else, Corrina values customer service, which really is the foundation of her business. Her customers mean the world to her. And she wants to make sure they know that by the way she treats them and cares for their baking needs.
The perfect brand
Overall this experience was fantastic. I had a good idea of what I wanted and what I felt really reflected who I am and the vibe I want my company to give off. Creating a mood board was extremely helpful in order to really see for myself what I wanted also. Just to give a more clear vision. This was used perfectly by the staff at Autumn Lane to create the perfect brand look for me.
The process of choosing through proofs and styles was quite fun and not overly difficult for me. The designs were so well done and I really followed my instincts to select what I felt best with. There were definite times when I didn’t feel a proof or idea captured what I was going for but had no idea what to do with it. Lily was able to run with my “I don’t know what I don’t like, but I’m not feeling it..” comments and really come up with something wonderful! That impressed me and made the experience so much more fantastic.
Having this new brand look makes me feel like this business is really a part of me and represents me much better than my previous look. This gives me motivation and excitement to get out there and promote more because I’m proud of what this business is AND what it looks like.
It’s not all icing and sprinkles
Like many other entrepreneurs, Corrina admits that her biggest obstacle has been her own self-doubt. The transition from employee to Boss Babe can be a struggle. But with every experience she’s expanding her knowledge and determination to succeed.
Even a casual look at the Frosted page on Instagram will show that Corrina is on the way to making something amazing out of her business. These beautiful baked creations are almost too pretty to eat.
Sometimes life has other ideas for us. Corrina had never pictured herself as a business owner and emphasizes that it had never been a vision or dream. Yet here she is. A love for creating and decorating grew and would not be denied.
Taking the step to be a business owner was scary and there were lots of reasons not to. There are plenty of struggles, but it was the right step. I’m so grateful for the support around me that encouraged me to take the leap to be a part of something beautiful.
The next layer
Now the main goal is to open a brick and mortar bakery for Frosted, further expanding the customer service ethic. Corrina loves the idea of having a comfortable environment for her customers to gather for a cupcake, scone or cookie, and relaxed conversation with a cup of coffee.
Make yourself proud. Never give up and don’t compare yourself to those who have been in the game longer. There is always someone who has more experience and it can be discouraging to compare yourself to those people. But we are all on our own journey and in different places on our paths. Learn from those who are more experienced, find a mentor if you can, and always be true to you.
