Jordyn Bohon has a career in the Navy. But she also has a growing business that’s portable (no pun intended). ‘Makeup By Jordyn Bohon’ goes wherever she does!
When your job takes you to a different place every few years, how can you diversify your income? Simple. You take your business along with you. Jordyn Bohon is pursuing a career in the US Navy. She expects a change in duty stations from time to time, but wanted to start building a business of her own.
“I wanted to start building a business that I could take with me as I move for the Navy and something that I could continue to do once I retire. In 2016, I finally decided to pursue something that I had loved for a very long time: Makeup Artistry.”
‘Makeup By Jordyn Bohon’ was no snap decision, however. Becoming a makeup artist was something she had mulled over for awhile. Before enlisting, she had done other people’s makeup for special events. And later, while on deployment, she did her own makeup every day. She did her research and started practicing.
Jordyn started in Virginia Beach, Virginia where she was stationed at the time. She booked some amazing weddings and found her niche as a Bridal Makeup Artist. A year later, she moved down to Pensacola Beach, Florida for her next duty station. She made an important investment in herself and went to Esthetician school for the first 3 months in Florida. During that time, she realized that she needed to re-launch her business once she had graduated school. Jordyn reached out to Autumn Lane Paperie for design expertise, and the collaboration has produced a beautiful brand!

“My biggest obstacle has been myself. I am an over thinker and a planner. All of that thinking can lead to myself getting in the way. Do not let yourself miss some amazing business adventures and opportunities. Just jump in!”
Realize what you’re getting into. Becoming a makeup artist is not a cheap start up business. You have to put a large amount of money into buying your kit and fine tuning your skills before you start making a return on your investment.
Research the area you are in. How much are the makeup artists in your area charging? Figure out how much you would have to charge to stay at a reasonable price for the quality of work you are doing. Then, decide whether you can make a profit — or break even — charging that amount.
Research how much advertising costs. You have to advertise! It’s so important to get your name and brand out in front of people searching for makeup artists.
And after all that research is done, you have to have the will power, drive, and motivation to stay in the race. Love what you do and put passion into it, even when it gets hard or during the off season.
Re-branding as a makeup artist has its challenges. Most makeup brands or businesses include some picture of a lipstick, lips, or lashes. Jordyn knew she wanted to be different and wanted an aesthetic that fits her taste and personality. She had an image in mind that would identify her as makeup artist, but also have a rustic feel to it.
Rustic wedding vibes are all over Pinterest, but Jordyn wanted it to feel like it was her own type of rustic. She wanted to add makeup brushes into the brand, to set herself apart. And the script type font, which she loves, needed to be incorporated as well.
“Autumn Lane Paperie made the whole process so easy! This new brand has set me apart from other makeup artists in my area. And it easily ties in to all of my social media sites and my website. When you now see my brand, you know who it is you are talking to. I stand out.”
