From food still life to portraiture
Zachary Gawthorp’s photography career began almost by accident, using his phone to portray his food creations. But it turns out that his culinary school training (2 earned degrees) was just the appetizer. Now well into preparation for the entrée, Zachary Elijah Photography is being served.
Currently located in Raeford, North Carolina, Zachary is about halfway between Southern Pines and Fayetteville. Raeford is on the southern side of Fort Bragg. Zack is a Lifestyle Photographer, offering sessions for couples/engagements, families, lifestyle/portraits, seniors and branding. True enough, there are many photographers in the same area. But, he’s not worried.
With photography, I believe it’s all about the artist. No two photos are the same. Each artist has a different view, shooting style, and editing style. There is plenty of room for us all to create!
I’ll be your server this evening
Zachary’s background is in the Hospitality industry, and he has worked in all positions of a restaurant. That means he’s been a dishwasher, bussed tables, taken orders and kept the glasses filled, prepared meals, and been the host. We know he’s not afraid of work, right? So we have a feeling that now that he’s found his true passion – portrait photography – he’s on his way to mastering it also.
My passion for photography actually started when I was in Culinary School. I wanted people to see my food and really connect with it, so I started taking photos. This was also back in 2011, and I was just using a phone, but I started experimenting with composition. That passion soon transitioned into taking photos of all sorts of things around me.
Eventually Zachary met the woman who would become his wife, and she happened to have a DSLR camera. He used it to take shots of landscapes, which really taught him the ins and outs of the camera. Also he learned editing software, like Lightroom and Photoshop. At that point the idea of taking photos of people had never even occurred to him. With food and landscapes, Zachary was always in control. He could set the scene exactly how he wanted it. Everything was so still and quiet.
But with people, everything is much different. There’s a natural element, a flow, an interaction. I started taking photos of my wife and fell in love with the whole process. She would post them to her social media and people started asking who her photographer was, and at that point, I knew I had something.
Define your image
Branding is such a key part of your business. It tells people who you are and what your style is. It helps keep things cohesive. And it’s so much fun! The design process, picking colors and fonts. Being a creative, I loved being present and being a part of it.
Logo design was probably the most difficult portion as this is what your clients will see first and connect to you. Choosing something that represents both you and your style is so important. Once you have the logo, the rest pretty much falls in place. I’m so glad I chose to brand my business as it will really help tell my story!
What comes next?
Zachary plans on becoming better each day, practicing his skill and continuing to grow his business. As of now, he divides his time between photography and his chef duties. But the goal is to be a full time photographer by the end of this year.
The biggest obstacle so far has been learning the business side of things. The artistic and creative side is easy, and that’s what makes the spark. But knowing how to run the day to day routine is what makes the fuel for the spark to create the fire. Take the time to lay the right foundation and learn the money skills.
