Trained in Child Care from Birth
When Sakina was in diapers herself, her mother ran a service-based business in their home, caring for infants. Over 25 years later, they still keep in touch with those families. That bond stayed with Sakina for her whole life.
My business started very organically, as I had no plans of doing what I do now. I was working for a newborn care agency after I graduated college, as something to do while waiting to get a job in one of the top hospitals in Virginia. The plan was to work as a nurse in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
However, Sakina’s heart was in the home, working in a familiar environment with newborns and their parents. There were many things she wanted to do differently, which she knew would be of great benefit to families. But through the agency, that would have been limited. So, almost before she knew it, she was on her own, starting a business from scratch.
More Than Just Changing Diapers
The branding process was a little more difficult than I thought. I went with a different company before Autumn Lane, and they just did not see my vision. Lily did my entire branding and really understood my vision. That made me pleased to know that I would get the results I was looking for.
I think my new brand will elevate my business by setting the tone that I want my target audience to feel – comfort and trust.
Once the brand is right, everything else will follow. Sakina has mastered the skills of what she does, but her biggest obstacle was figuring out the business plan and the legalities. As you may know, in the healthcare field, legal requirements are many and intricate! Read the Snuggle Standards to know that your family’s well-being is primary to Sakina and her team of professionals.
Birthing the Business
It takes a lot to say you’re going to start your own full-time business and then turn down any job opportunities to take you away from it. Especially in the early stages, and then in the slow times, you’ll be tempted to take at least a part-time job just for the income. But stick to your business plan and do something every day to push forward.
Sakina’s vision for the future is to hire more nurses that she can personally train in her methods, to expand the company’s scope and grow it organically. To further that aim, she’s pursuing her Masters as a Family Nurse Practitioner. Genuinely be passionate about newborn care because in this field it will show in your work.
